  9. [S324] From the NEIMME (North of England Institute of Mining and Mechangical Engineers) website (www.mininginstitute.org.uk): "A hewer is a man who cuts coal, removing it from the coal face. His was normally one of the most dangerous jobs in coal mines because in addition to the usual dangers, coal would fall from the face and sometimes the roof would fall in. Normal procedure for hewers was to cut a slot in the base of the coal seam so that coal would drop, or be coerced into dropping down under gravity. The roof immediately above the coal was also liable to fall. Hewers, being in the vicinity of this activity were often killed by accidental falls of coal or stone. Hewers death certificates frequently record this as the cause of death. In fact it became such a commonplace accident that the Inspector of mines in Britain generally recorded it with little investigation, since there was little they could do about it. Hewing was hard work, and mining culture in many places records the strength and bravery of the hewer." (accessed 13 January 2012).

ChartsAncestors of Benjamin Loose Wick (1846-1884)
Robert Wick was born circa January 1820 at Holkham, Norfolk, England.4,5,6,7 He appeared on the England Census of 1841 at Highgate, Gaywood, Norfolk, England.8 He was a bricklayer between 1841 and 1891.9,10,11,12,13 He married Elizabeth Loose, daughter of Robert Loose and Elizabeth Hall, on 9 July 1844 at St. Nicholas Church, Wells next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England.14,15
Robert appears in the 1851 England Census as the head of a household at Clubb Lane, Wells next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England, together with his wife, Elizabeth Wick. Others enumerated in the household included Robert John Wick, Jonas Edwin Wick and Benjamin Loose Wick.1
Robert Wick may have married Jemima Stringer, daughter of John Stringer and Charlotte Withers, between 1854 and 1860, as she is listed in some census sources as Robert's spouse; however, some sources subsequenty refer to her as Robert's servant and her likely burial entry in the Wells next-the-Sea parish register shows her as Jemima "Sucker" (alternate spelling of Secker). Thus it is possible that Jemima and Robert never married, although they had several children together.16
Robert appears in the 1871 England Census as the head of a household at West Glebe, Wells next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England, together with his wife, Jemima Wick. Others enumerated in the household included James Wick and Anna Maria Wick.17
Robert Wick died in August 1907 at Wells next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England.18,19 He was buried on 31 August 1907 at Wells next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England.19
