Jemima Stringer was born circa June 1828 at Wells next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England.4,2,5 She may have married Robert Wick, son of Jonas Wick and Mary Sexton, between 1854 and 1860, as she is listed in some census sources as Robert's spouse; however, some sources subsequenty refer to her as Robert's servant and her likely burial entry in the Wells next-the-Sea parish register shows her as Jemima "Sucker" (alternate spelling of Secker). Thus it is possible that Jemima and Robert never married, although they had several children together.6 Jemima appeared in the 1871 England Census at West Glebe, Wells next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England, as the wife of Robert Wick.7 Jemima Stringer died circa 9 June 1894 at Wells next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England.8,9 She was buried on 11 June 1894 at St. Nicholas Church, Wells next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England.9

Richard Abbs was born circa February 1766 at Runton, Norfolk, England.4 He married Elizabeth Ward, daughter of Joseph Ward and Elizabeth Leverett, on 6 July 1789 at Holy Trinity Church, West Runton, Norfolk, England.5,2 Richard Abbs was a farmer.6 He executed a Will on 13 November 1831 at Runton, Norfolk, England.7,8,9 He died on 14 November 1831 at Runton, Norfolk, England.10,11 He was buried on 19 November 1831 at Holy Trinity Church, Runton, Norfolk, England.12 His obituary appeared in Norfolk Chronicle on 26 November 1831 at Norfolk, England. The obituary read:

On the 14th inst. at Runton, aged 65, Richard Abbs, a remarkable instance of what honesty and industry my effect. He married very young, and early in life had a family of 17 children entirely dependent on his common labour for a maintenance, which during the high prices of the late war, never could have been supplied without parochial relief. His known good qualities, his honest principles, and industrious habits, recommended him to the notice of a landlord, who let him a small farm of 37 acres, on which, by living as coarsely as any pauper in the parish, he supported this large family, highly respected by his neighbors and punctual to an hour in the payment of his rent. At a subsequent period he removed into a farm of about 70 acres, on which he ended his life, and notwithstanding the constant assistance which so large a family required, and which he as a good father was ever ready to give, he at length died, with stock, crop, and property entirely unincumbered, leaving 16 children and 58 grandchildren. This may be considered as one proof that honesty is the best policy and industry the best riches.13

As of October 1832, when an auction of Richard's farm animals, equipment and tools was advertised, Richard's estate included the following personal property: five cart horses and mares; black cart colt; rising three; five cows (some pregnant); heifers and steers; two sows and 17 pigs; several fowl; road wagon; tumbrils; wheel barrow; two plows; two pair of harrows; harrow sledge; land roller; two turnip bins; three pig troughs; barn ladder; strong cart and plough harness; rakes, forks and the like.14

  19. [S471] E-mail from Alison McFaul (e-mail address) to Michael K. Davis, dated 2 December 2011 (Privately held by Michael K. He sent us a photocopy of relevant pages from a booklet entitled 'Where two or three are gathered', being a centenary history of East Runton Methodist Church. It is that publication that gives Francis as son of Richard and Elizabeth (nee Ward). The key sentence is: Richard married Elizabeth Ward in 1789 and had 17 children: Francis (1805-84), the founding father of the (East Runton) chapel, mentioned in White's Directory of 1845, was the eighth son of Richard.""
  20. [S324] There is some disagreement among researchers as to whether the Francis Abbs that married Elizabeth Hindry was the son of Richard Abbs and Elizabeth (nee Ward) or the son of Francis Abbs and Sarah (nee Adcock). For the following reasons, I believe a straightforward reading of the evidence leads to the conclusion that he was the son of Richard Abbs and Elizabeth Ward.

First, Francis Abbs was buried in Runton 24 Nov 1884 and the parish register records his age as 79 (not a rounded 75 or 80, a very precise 79). I believe his gravestone supports this age. That puts his birth at circa 1805, which is squarely between the births of Richard Abbs' and Elizabeth (Ward) Abbs' reported children Isaac (b. 1804) and Judith (b. 1806). Richard and Elizabeth Abbs were prolific parents, and had many children within 12 months of each other.

Second, Richard Abbs and Elizabeth (Ward) Abbs had a son Matthew and a daughter Celia. Francis Abbs marriage to Elizabeth Hindry was witnessed by Matthew Abbs and Celia Abbs.

Third, Richard's 1831 Will mentions his sons (plural), Richard and Francis, in describing a piece of land that they were then farming. It seems ludicrous to suggest that the Will is wrong just because there is no corresponding baptism in the parish register. Parish registers are notoriously spotty, and Runton's register is no exception. I would consider a legal document more likely to be accurate than a parish register.

Fourth, EVERY census from 1841-1881 shows Francis Abbs age consistent with a birth circa 1806 (or late 1805). None are consistent with a birth circa 1811. While the 1841 census will round ages to 5 years, none of the other censuses round ages. Reported ages in census can be unreliable and often vary depending on who reports the information; but in this case, Francis' age is consistent across 5 censuses and 50 years.

Fifth, Francis Abbs, born in 1805, would have been 22 years old when he married Elizabeth Hindry in 1827; versus Francis Adcock Abbs, born October 1811, who would have been only 16.
  21. [S194] Baptisms, Marriages, Burials Transcript, Runton, Norfolk, 1743-1813, states that Celia Abbs, daughter of Richard Abbs and Elizabeth Abbs, was born on November 6 and baptised on November 12, 1809.

  4. [S324] Proof of Elizabeth Ward's parentage is not absolute. Later census and death records suggest Elizabeth was born in Norfolk circa 1767-1771. Joseph Ward and Elizabeth Leverett are the most likely parent candidates I have identified from online searches of the FreeReg database (which is not complete), based on parish register entries of baptisms by that couple in and around Runton during the late 1750s-1760s. Joseph and Elizabeth were married at Aylmerton in 1758 and they baptised children in Aylmerton and Runton between 1759 and 1772. There is a break in their Aylmerton and Runton baptisms between 1761 and 1766. In 1765, there is a Gresham baptism for Elizabeth Ward, daughter of Joseph Ward and Elizabeth. Gresham is a neighboring town to Runton and Aylmerton. Naming patterns may be considered as weak evidence of parentage; Richard Abbs and Elizabeth Ward had a daughter named Elizabeth and a son named Joseph.
