On 23 November 1658, Richard Abbs acquired three woods of land at Aylmerton, Norfolk, England, from an unknown person described as follows: three woods of land between the land late of John Boswell on the East and the land of Dixensmen on the West and abutting the highway toward the North and the land late of John Poane toward the south.2 On between 1661 and 1701, Richard Abbs granted copyhold in two parcels of three roods and two roods, respectively, at Gresham, Norfolk, England, to Peter Abbs which parcels Richard Abbs had acquired as son and heir of their father, Richard Abbs.4 Richard Abbs was listed in the Hearth Tax Assessment of 29 September 1664 as a resident of Aylmerton, Norfolk, England, in a home containing three hearths.5 William Windham's Green Book, a detailed accounting of the management of his estates, reflects that in 1681, Richard Abbs defaulted on his rents and that on 9 August 1681, Richard's brother, Peter Abbs of Runton, offered to assume Richard's rents and properties.6

Francis Abbs was born circa 1805 at Runton, Norfolk, England.1,4,5,6 He married Elizabeth Hindrey on 24 April 1827 at All Saints Church, Bodham, Norfolk, England.7 Francis Abbs was Methodist preacher and farmer in 1861 at Runton, Norfolk, England.5
Francis appears in the 1861 England Census as the head of a household at Runton, Norfolk, England, together with his wife, Elizabeth Abbs. Others enumerated in the household included Emma Abbs, Mahala D. Abbs, Rebekah Abbs and Eliza Abbs.5

Francis appears in the 1871 England Census as the head of a household at Runton, Norfolk, England, together with his wife, Elizabeth Abbs. Others enumerated in the household included Mahala D. Abbs.8
Francis Abbs died on 23 November 1884 at England.9,10 He was buried on 28 November 1884 at Holy Trinity Church, Runton, Norfolk, England.9,11 Francis Abbs's Will was proved at Norwich, Norfolk, England, on 13 April 1885 and his estate was valued at £197 19s 3d.10
Research note: There is some disagreement among researchers as to whether the Francis Abbs that married Elizabeth Hindry was the son of Richard Abbs and Elizabeth (nee Ward) or the son of Francis Abbs and Sarah (nee Adcock). For the following reasons, I believe a straightforward reading of the evidence leads to the conclusion that he was the son of Richard Abbs and Elizabeth Ward.

First, Francis Abbs was buried in Runton 24 Nov 1884 and the parish register records his age as 79 (not a rounded 75 or 80, a very precise 79). I believe his gravestone supports this age. That puts his birth at circa 1805, which is squarely between the births of Richard Abbs' and Elizabeth (Ward) Abbs' reported children Isaac (b. 1804) and Judith (b. 1806). Richard and Elizabeth Abbs were prolific parents, and had many children within 12 months of each other.

Second, Richard Abbs and Elizabeth (Ward) Abbs had a son Matthew and a daughter Celia. Francis Abbs marriage to Elizabeth Hindry was witnessed by Matthew Abbs and Celia Abbs.

Third, Richard's 1831 Will mentions his sons (plural), Richard and Francis, in describing a piece of land that they were then farming. It seems ludicrous to suggest that the Will is wrong just because there is no corresponding baptism in the parish register. Parish registers are notoriously spotty, and Runton's register is no exception. I would consider a legal document more likely to be accurate than a parish register.

Fourth, EVERY census from 1841-1881 shows Francis Abbs age consistent with a birth circa 1806 (or late 1805). None are consistent with a birth circa 1811. While the 1841 census will round ages to 5 years, none of the other censuses round ages. Reported ages in census can be unreliable and often vary depending on who reports the information; but in this case, Francis' age is consistent across 5 censuses and 50 years.

Fifth, Francis Abbs, born in 1805, would have been 22 years old when he married Elizabeth Hindry in 1827; versus Francis Adcock Abbs, born October 1811, who would have been only 16..
